The Four Transformations in Practice: Reading Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji
The Si Hua (四化) are Zi Wei's verb system — the stars are nouns (who),
the palaces are adverbs (where), and the transformations are verbs
(where the energy moves). Reading a chart without flying the
transformations is watching a photo instead of a film.
Three layers to keep separate
| Layer | Source | Governs |
|---|---|---|
| Birth-year | Natal year's heavenly stem | Lifetime energy baseline — the factory settings |
| Decade | Current decade-palace stem | Where this ten years' emphasis flows |
| Annual | Current year's stem | This year's trigger points |
Stack them: the birth Ji marks a lifelong theme; an annual Ji landing
on the same spot is this year's activation.
The four personalities
- Hua Lu (化禄): smooth flow, affinity, energy that arrives
naturally. Whichever palace it enters, that area "comes easily" —
Lu in Wealth means money flows; in Spouse, affection comes readily;
in Career, the vocation finds you. But Lu isn't automatically good —
an easy palace also breeds laziness and taking things for granted
- Hua Quan (化权): command, control, energy won by effort. That
palace is "grippable" — and tense. Quan in Career is workplace
dominance; in Spouse, a tug over who leads
- Hua Ke (化科): reputation, polish, benefactor rescue. The palace
it enters gains luster and help — the mildest blessing and the main
mechanism of "turning bad luck around"
- Hua Ji (化忌): fixation, entanglement, giving more than you get.
Ji marks the "homework palace" — in Spouse, love grinds; in Career,
the path twists. Important: Ji ≠ bad — Ji means "you care." The Ji
palace is often where a person pushes hardest and grows most
The three questions that decode any point
For any transformation, ask:
- Which star transforms? The star sets the flavor — Tan Lang Lu is
charm-and-talent abundance; Wu Qu Lu is grind-and-earn abundance.
Same "Lu," different goods
- Into which palace? The palace sets the landing — Lu into Wealth
is easy money; Lu into Fortune is an easy mind
- Who fires it? The palace emitting the transformation is the
actor — Spouse firing Ji into Life means the relationship pulls at
you; Life firing Ji into Spouse means you bring the intensity
A concrete example
A Jia (甲) year birth: Lian Zhen Lu, Po Jun Quan, Wu Qu Ke, Tai Yang Ji.
- Lian Zhen Lu into Fortune → the inner life is the source of pleasure
- Po Jun Quan into Wealth → money made by breaking and rebuilding
- Wu Qu Ke into Travel → reputation and helpers away from home
- Tai Yang Ji into Health → the body, and bonds with father/male
elders, are the lifelong lesson
String your natal four into one sentence and you have the chart's
energy résumé.
