How to Ask Accurate Questions in Qi Men Dun Jia: Timing and Question Phrasing
Qi Men Dun Jia is a one-case-one-chart divination system — the chart does not answer "how will my life turn out," it only answers "this matter, at this very moment, what should I do?"
The way you ask determines how the Useful God (用神) is selected; if the Useful God is wrong, the entire chart reading is wrong.
Timing: Cast the Chart the Moment Your Heart Stirs
- Traditional principle: The energy field is most responsive at the exact moment of heart-stirring and thought-arising. A question you've agonized over for three days is less effective than casting the chart in the instant you most want to ask.
- For retrospective review: Use the time an event occurred to cast the chart and verify it.
- For choosing auspicious timing: For important future actions (signing contracts / travel / negotiations), you can pre-cast several candidate moments and compare the charts.
How to Phrase Your Question
❌ Poor phrasing: "How is my recent fortune?" — too broad, no anchor point for the Useful God.
✅ Good phrasing = specific matter + subject + time frame:
- "What are the prospects of switching jobs to Company A this month?" (Kai Men + Day Stem, career)
- "Can this business venture succeed if I partner with XX?" (Liu He + Sheng Men, partnership for wealth)
- "Will my meeting with the landlord this Wednesday afternoon about lease renewal go smoothly?" (Sheng Men / Kai Men + response timing)
- "In which direction should I search for my lost ID documents?" (Useful God image-association + direction)
