The Useful Spirit is the "anchor" of Qi Men Dun Jia readings — whatever question is asked, the corresponding star, gate, and stem become the object of analysis. Choose the wrong Useful Spirit, and the entire chart goes wrong.
General Rules
- Day Stem = the querent themselves; Hour Stem = the matter in question (also represents juniors/subordinates)
- The Year Life (the heavenly stem of the querent's birth year) falling in a palace represents the innate foundation, which can be consulted as a supplement
- For the Useful Spirit, first examine the strength or weakness of its palace (the palace's Five-Element vs. the generating/overcoming relationships with the spirit's/gate's/star's Five-Element), then examine the pattern's responses
