How to Read an Annual (Liu Nian) Forecast in Zi Wei Dou Shu
"How is this year for me?" is the most-asked question in Zi Wei. The method has four steps, all built on deterministic chart facts.
Step 1: Locate the year's palace
Every year's earthly branch anchors the annual Life Palace for everyone. In 2026 (Bing-Wu, fire horse), it sits at the Wu palace. See which stars occupy that palace — that's this year's theme.
Step 2: Read the year's four transformations
Each year stem flies out Lu (gain), Quan (power), Ke (recognition), and Ji (obstruction). Check which of your palaces they land in:
- Annual Lu into a palace: that domain runs smooth, gains accumulate
- Annual Ji into a palace: that domain is where you pay — the single most important point to watch
- Ji into Life Palace: a year to consolidate, not attack; Ji into Wealth: money pressure; Ji into Career: job turbulence
Step 3: Layer it on the decade limit (Da Xian)
The decade limit sets the season; the annual reading is the weather. The same event lands differently depending on which decade palace it activates. Annual Ji stacking on decade Ji (double-Ji) is a genuine warning for that palace's domain.
Step 4: Ground it in your natal chart
The same annual Ji in Career feels like "pressure from above" for a Zi Wei life-palace native, and like "time to jump" for a Qi Sha native. The year's water flows through your chart's riverbed — the natal structure decides how it runs.
Common mistakes
- Reading only the annual palace's main star — without the transformations, you're reading the headline, not the article
- Treating Ji as disaster — Ji is attachment and effort, pressure and investment both
- Skipping true solar time correction — a mis-cast chart makes the whole exercise about someone else
