Don't Know Your Birth Hour? What Still Works
Elders remember "born in the morning" or "around lunchtime." Without an exact hour, both Zi Wei Dou Shu and BaZi are affected — but to different degrees, and both have workarounds.
BaZi: missing the hour pillar, sixty percent remains
- Year, month, day pillars intact: day master, month-branch structure, foundational patterns all still readable
- What's lost: later-life palace, children palace, some pattern conditions, precise luck-cycle start ages
- "Born in the morning" narrows candidates to 3–4 hour branches — not a dead end
Zi Wei: bigger impact, but rectifiable
The Life Palace position is set by lunar month + birth hour — an unknown hour rotates the whole twelve-palace chart. However, birth-year transformations (Si Hua) still tell you which stars carry Lu/Quan/Ke/Ji.
Rectification is the professional route: cast each candidate hour, then test the charts against known life events (education years, marriage, major illness, parents' situation). The hour whose chart shows the right activations in the right years is likely yours. Casting charts is free and login-free here — run all candidates and compare.
Honest boundaries
- Rectification narrows, it doesn't guarantee — sometimes two hours both fit, and the honest answer is "uncertain"
- If even the birth day is unclear, start with civil or hospital records first
- An approximate hour is still worth charting — the year/month/day pillars carry most of the structure
