Not Sure of Your Birth Hour? The Cross-Chart Method

"My mom says it was sometime in the afternoon" — the single most common
problem in chart casting. A one-hour difference changes the BaZi hour
pillar entirely and swaps palaces in Zi Wei Dou Shu. But uncertain
doesn't mean un-castable
.

First, size up your uncertainty

What you rememberImpact
A definite two-hour window ("3–5pm")Perfect — cast directly, zero error
A vague window ("afternoon, maybe evening")Spans 1–2 double-hours — do a comparison cast
Just "morning" or "evening"3–5 candidates — needs event back-testing
No idea at allAsk family, find the birth certificate, or full-range back-testing

A classic trap: daylight saving time. Mainland China ran DST from
1986–1991 — birth times remembered or recorded then may be "clock time"
an hour ahead of astronomical time. Our birthplace form detects this
automatically from place and date.

Method one: compare the candidate charts

Cast the chart for each candidate hour and see which one sounds like you:

the wrong chart reads like a stranger ("that's not me at all" = ruled out)

against things that already happened

Practical flow: cast both → run the AI reading on each → whichever chart's
key statements (personality, relationship pattern, family dynamics) fit
better is very likely your hour.

Method two: back-test with known events

Use major events with firm dates as a ruler:

  1. List 2–3 anchors: year of marriage, a major illness or surgery,

emigration or career change, a child's birth year

  1. For each candidate hour, check whether the decade-luck and annual

layers activate in those years

  1. The candidate that matches the most events wins — traditional

practitioners call this "fixing the chart" (定盘); today the AI can lay
out each candidate's annual overlays for direct comparison.

A real case: Hong Kong, 2014-01-02 — 21:18 or 21:30?

A genuine boundary case from this site. Hong Kong sits at 114.2°E,
so clock time runs ~27 minutes ahead of true solar time
(longitude correction −23 min plus the equation of time).
21:18 and 21:30 are only 12 clock-minutes apart — after correction
they land on opposite sides of the Xu/Hai boundary:

Chart A: clock 21:18Chart B: clock 21:30
True solar time20:51 → Xu hour (戌)21:03 → Hai hour (亥)
Life palaceMao 卯 · Tai Yin (Ke) + Zuo Fu + Tian KuiYin 寅 · Zi Wei + Tian Fu + Huo Xing
Body palaceWealth palace (Hai)Spouse palace (Zi)
Soul/Body starsWen Qu / Tian JiLu Cun / Tian Ji
TemperamentQuiet, literary, mentor luckAssertive, competitive, leader type
Decade 12–21Zi Fu + Wen Qu — smooth schoolingTian Ji (fallen) + Qing Yang — turbulent
Core tensionSpouse palace heavy Sha; parents palace Tan Lang JiFortune palace Tan Lang Ji; body-in-spouse Po Jun Lu
Early healthWu Qu in Health — sturdy, watch injuriesTian Tong + Ling Xing in Health — frequent minor illness

Same day, same Five-Element class, same year transformations —
everything differs only because the hour shifts every palace by one branch.
This isn't "which chart is better" — it's two entirely different life narratives.

To fix the chart (定盘), check the last decade against reality:

four-Sha palace at Chou — if that year brought a clear illness,
scare, or family event, lean A; if uneventful, lean B

with Tan Lang Ji — visible family/school disruption; in B it lands
on Fortune — mostly inner restlessness

plain observation settles it fastest

Both charts open directly (pre-cast with HK true solar time):

Open Chart A · Xu hour, full chart →

Open Chart B · Hai hour, full chart →

One honest note

If your uncertainty stays inside the same double-hour ("3 or 4pm" —
both still Shen hour 申时), congratulations: there's no error at all.
The anxiety from uncertainty usually exceeds the actual error.

After casting, you can re-cast with the other hour anytime — save both
versions in My Reports for side-by-side comparison.
